Pre-Race Information Panel

The 2010 Kauai Marathon will be hosting the first annual pre-race informational panel on Saturday, September 4^th at 2:00pm. The panel will include Dean Karnazes, Bart Yasso, Rich Hanna and J.T. Service. Moderating the panel will be The Kaua’i Marathon founder Jeff Sacchini. Sacchini will be covering topics such as injury prevention, The Kauai Marathon course review, course tips, and race day advice. The panel will also be available for a limited question and answer session with the attending audience. Barring heavy surf or inclement weather the panel will take place on the ocean front lawn of the beautiful Sheraton Kauai Resort just steps from Sunday’s finish line.

The $15,000 Marathon Challenge

Among the Facebook chatter about what to wear, what to pack and how to train very few have been talking about how to win! We’ll let the silence slide as “racer strategy” but until the start we’ll be left wondering if anyone is looking to take home their share of $15,000?

African athletes Richard Kandie, Moninda Marube, and Japeth Ng’Joy are up for the challenge. Also, Mr. Masanori Hagitani, winner of the Iwaki City Sunshine Marathon in Japan sure knows how to get the job done. Can American Michael Wardian who just took 3^rd at the “World 50k Championships” last weekend recover in time to give Jt Service a run for his money?

All 2010 Kauai Marathon participants that are officially registered in the marathon are eligible for the $15,000 Kauai Marathon Challenge.

Time Standards Eligible for the Kauai Marathon Challenge:

Men: Sub- 2:30:00
Women: Sub 2:45:00

All times and finishing order will be based on USATF rules (GUN time). No chip time is eligible for the Speed Challenge bonus.

Kaua’i Marathon and Half Marathon Traffic Advisory

On Sunday, September 5th, traffic will continue to flow in and around the Koloa, Poipu, Lawai and Kalaheo. However it will be impacted by lane and road closures from 5:00 am to 2:30 pm. Anyone traveling in these areas should allow extra travel time and proceed with extreme caution. Traffic flow will be monitored by Kauai Police Department throughout the course(s). Pre-Race Fun Run with Dean Karnazes and Bart Yasso

Saturday’s pre-race fun run is to provide registered runners and non-registered local residents the opportunity to soak in the marathon spirit by participating in an informal run. This is a 3 to 5 mile run that will be lead by marathon co-hosts Dean Karnazes and Bart Yasso. The fun run will not be a race and therefore it will not be timed. All are welcome, young and old as we kick off the 2010 Kauai Marathon.

When: 8:00 am Saturday September 4, 2010

Where: At the end of Poipu Road, just past the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa which is located at 1571 Poipu Road, Koloa

Parking/Transportation: Please park in the designated event parking lot on the left hand side of Poipu Road. Shuttle service will be provided from the Sheraton Kauai Resort. The schedule is: 7:15 am, 7:30 am and 7:45 am. Return shuttle begins at 9:00 am and will run for approximately 45 minutes.

Route: The fun run will start at the end of Poipu Road, just past the Grand Hyatt Resort & Spa. The run will turn around at the stop sign, approximately 2.5 miles down the gravel road. Runners may turn back at any time based on their preference as the route will be an “out and back.”

Post-Run: Runners will be treated to cold Ultima sports drink after the run and the opportunity to mix it up with Dean, Bart and other runners.

The entrance of the royal court adds reverence to the festivities prior to the partaking of the carbo load meal. Now, with darkness setting upon the luau grounds accented by the warm glow of tiki torches, guests are ready to delight in the sights and sounds of a Polynesian dance and song extravaganza hosted by local celebrity Dickie Chang and presented by Kapu Kinimaka-Alquiza’s renowned Halau Hula O Kaohikukapulani. Having won numerous awards at the Merrie Monarch Festival, the premier invitation-only Hawaiian hula competition, this hula troupe showcases traditional and modern dances of the Hawaiian and Pacific Islands in a truly authentic and awe inspiring presentation. A highlight of the show is the exciting and jaw-dropping fire knife dancer who amazes audiences with his daring dance of flaming torches to the rhythmic pounding of drums.
